Many people are empathic, meaning they have the ability to feel emotions and energy from people around them. Most of us interact with anywhere from a dozen to several hundred people a day, and all it takes is walking by someone – not even saying hello – to pick up their feelings.
When this ability goes unchecked, energy that doesn’t belong to us can accumulate, resulting in feeling overwhelmed and drained – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Now, I would never suggest anyone actively try to suppress their gift of empathy. Empathy is our natural state! We just happen to live in a world where most people are taught to purposely shut down their empathy and self-awareness.
As a result, those of us who are sensitive end up taking on emotions from people who aren’t even aware of how they feel. That emotion has to go somewhere! So we absorb it and take it on, without even trying.
So what do we do about it? There are two basic goals here:
1) Moderate what comes in, turning the channel on and off at will, so you can choose when to receive others’ energy and when to hold it at bay.
2) Filter, discern and clear what does come in, so it can flow through you and you don’t have to carry it forever.
